Up The Town
Flying the Flags of Creativity and Community
Up The Town was a vibrant community project showcased through an exhibition at the Bagenalstown Library. Led by artist Leah Corbett, the project brought together pupils from three local primary schools in a creative collaboration to design flags that embodied their schools' identities and their collective sense of place.
The journey began with an exploration of creativity and its meaning to the pupils. Through discussions, the children shared their ideas about what their dream creative time might look like. From these conversations, they embarked on a process of discovery, using drawing, mark-making, and collaborative artwork to express their ideas. Each child contributed unique elements, which were eventually combined into collective designs that reflected the diversity and imagination of the group.
The final phase of the project involved synthesising the children's work into three distinct flag designs. Each flag represented the essence of the creativity, identity, and pride of place the pupils had envisioned. These flags served as symbols of their schools and their collective effort, instilling a sense of achievement and pride as they flew high. The Up The Town project was a celebration of imagination, community, and identity. It highlighted the power of art to bring people together and inspired pride in one’s local surroundings through creativity and collaboration.
