“There is a River”, a song by Hugh W. Brown
Celebrating the journey of a song and its deep connection with the community of Bagenalstown.
There is a River is a heartfelt song written by Hugh W. Brown, Lead Artist of The Lock Keeper's Memories a project that highlights the rich cultural heritage and stories of Bagenalstown. The song, which has traversed decades and continents, has found its true essence in the town of Bagenalstown, by the River Barrow.
Originally part of the Circus Bone Idle show "Otherworlds" over 20 years ago, the song was transcribed by musical director Colin Blakey and performed by a talented ensemble. It resurfaced during Hugh's filmmaking journey in Cambodia, capturing the essence of the Mekong River in "Inside the Belly of a Dragon." Recently, the song emerged again as Hugh spent time in Bagenalstown, working on a promenade show with local people called The Lock Keeper’s Memories.
Thanks to the support of Creative Places Bagenalstown, Hugh was able to record what he hopes is the definitive version of There is a River. This version features the exceptional talents of vocalists Philippa O’Hara, Seamus "Baz" Lee, and Michelle Brady, along with uilleann piper Oisin McCann and drummer Darby Todd. The song was recorded by Dave Marks at Two Wolves Studios and Hugh Brown at Barrow Lane Air B’n’B Studios, Bagenalstown, and mixed and mastered by Dave Marks.
The song is dedicated to Hugh's grandfather, James McFerran Martin, who inspired Hugh with his wisdom and shared moments of whittling blackthorn sticks during their walks.
The accompanying video features footage captured by Hugh during his time in Bagenalstown and with his dogs, Elvis and Scarlett, in County Down. Edited by Ian Wiggins and enhanced with drone footage by Patrick Bramley, the video visually captures the spirit of the song and the town.
Hugh extends his gratitude to the wonderful people of Bagenalstown, especially those who participated in The Lock Keeper’s Memories, and to Sinead, Áine, and Louise of Creative Places Bagenalstown for their unwavering support. This song and video are a testament to the beautiful spirit of Bagenalstown and its community.
